Family Vacation in the Outer Banks

I mistakenly agreed to go on a family vacation this year. Don’t get me wrong I adore my family and really and truly wanted a vacation, but in hindsight it was a truly irresponsible thing to do. I am studying to take the bar exam currently and I certainly slacked off during my week long trip to the beach. I’m a rather pale person so I spent significant portions in the house, under the gazebo, and under a beach tent all while wearing SPF 50+ and re-applying every hour or so.  We were lucky enough to have a house with a Friday check in. This meant that there was almost no traffic on the way into the island. If you’ve ever gone to the Outer Banks with a Saturday check in you will know that the traffic can extend the 45 minute drive up to two or three hours. After checking in, getting settled, and running to the store for the necessities (food, coffee, and wine) we ate dinner in the gazebo. As we decompressed and relaxed, we watched a storm roll in across the island and into the ocean. It was beautiful. We never were hit with rain, but could see it in the distance.

Our house had this lovely gazebo atop the dune, which meant there was a constant breeze, except for the hottest day. On that day, only my mother and my aunt left the house to enjoy the beach.
The rest of us stayed inside where there was air conditioning and World Cup coverage on the TV.  USA USA USA!!!!
Unfortunately, when I was outside, I had the pleasure of spending most of my time attempting to study. The subjects were boring but the locale was superb.
Every night we got to watch the blood moon rise over the house….

And every morning my family watched the sunrise… I only participated on my last day as I tend to prefer sleep.
We had spectacular burgers at the Crafty Cow Burger Bar. I had the Backyard Burger and a home made shandy, a mix of a wheat beer and a lemonade. It was absolutely delicious and quite thirst quenching. While the cousins were in town they kept us all supplied with a drink from Bar Rescue, called the Resurrection. They went to Spirits on Bourbon in New Orleans the last time they were there and made sure to try the drink and get the recipe. It was delicious. The fresh jalepeno gave a nice little kick after each sip. They were also kind enough to supply us with a large amount of our favorite wine, Educated Guess.
Resurrection
1.25 oz. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
½ oz. blue curacao
1 oz. lime juice
¾ oz. honey syrup (2:1)
2 oz. coconut water
Garnish: Fresh jalapeno
On our last night in town, a huge storm rolled through, which actually hit us. I was unable to get any pictures of the beautiful lightning strikes as I was cooking a very large dinner for the family, but I did manage to get a couple of shots as the clouds rolled in.

It was truly a marvelous vacation. My only regret was getting so out of whack with my study schedule that I am now attempting to play catch up, but not being very successful. Hopefully the next couple of days I can get myself back on track and focused!
