How to Curate a Vision Board

A few months ago, I had found myself in a rut and I needed to find a way to visualize a future I loved. My best friend and I talked about how I may be able to work through it. She recommended I curate a vision board. I was a bit hesitant at first because I didn’t know exactly what I would put on there. After some discussion, we decided to create vision boards together, virtually. So we FaceTimed as we cut out pictures of things an put them on our pinboards. I want to show you exactly how to curate a vision board.

I have found my board to be very helpful. I try to spend a couple minutes every day just looking at the board and trying to remember to live my life in tune with the board. There are a few things you should probably do before you start pinning things to the board so that you get the most out of it.

Step One: Figure out what you want

I mean this in a long term goal kind of way, not necessarily an aesthetically pleasing kind of way. (Although, aesthetics are very important with this thing.) What I mean is sit down for twenty to thirty minutes before you start cutting or printing out pictures and figure out what you want your life to look like and how you want to feel.

I made quite a few jokes about how I wanted to FEEL like I was Joanna Gaines, but honestly, this was so helpful. Figure out what your priorities are and be specific about it. Say why a specific thing is a priority and how it impacts your life. I know it may sound silly, but figuring it out will really help you, both in creating a vision board and your life in general. Then go further, break those goals and priorities down into actual steps that you can take.

Step Two: Find your pictures

Now that you know how you want to feel, what your priorities are and how you are going to get there, find some pictures. Find pictures that evoke the feelings, or words that encapsulate those goals. Do you have a word of the year? Put that baby on the board.

Step Three: Put it all together.

Break out those push pins and start pinning. Find a way to get all those images you cut out up on that board. You can’t go wrong on this one. Some people like it super neat and gridlike. I prefer sort of a collage of things I love.

My inspiration board is two feet tall and filled with things that mean something to me. The Anthony Bourdain quote reminds me to try new things and go outside of my comfort zone. There are some tomatoes, herbs, and an avocado toast, because it is important to me that I’m eating fresh, healthy foods. I have the Rotary Club mission from last year, as well as their goal of Service above Self because it is so important to give back to the world. I have some pictures of Italy also known as my happy place.

Owning my own home is not in my near future. However, I found an apartment with a porch where I sit and read with Remington. I have my word of the year, Thrive, front and center. The past few years, I have felt like I have been just surviving. This year, though, I want to live the best version of my life. There are also some things that are calming for me, like a journal stamped with the word Authenticity. I included books, fresh flowers, and a sunset for the same reason. A beautiful bathroom signifies the importance of personal self-care and a cup of coffee to remind me to enjoy those long, lazy mornings.

Curating a vision board is not complicated. Sit with yourself and figure out what you want. It may be uncomfortable, but it provides focus. I will not say that this is a guaranteed fix. However, I will say that after I curated a vision board, my life began to change for the better. Perhaps, I put good vibes into the ether and that grew into this new life, but either way, I felt like this really worked for me. I hope this all helps you curate a vision board and a life you love.
