If you read my post about my reading goals for this year then you know that a big part of my goals this year is stepping outside of my typical reading comfort zone. To accomplish this, I decided to participate in the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge. It is the seventh year that the Modern Mrs. Darcy has hosted a reading challenge. This year is a bit of a “choose your own adventure” challenge. They provided a set of reflections that allowed me to focus on what I wanted out of my reading life this year.
These reflections were really great. I realized I wanted to read books that help me cultivate empathy, knowledge, and community. I adore all the fantasy books I read, but sometimes they are a bit heavier and don’t necessarily fall into these three spaces. They also helped me identify some book related non-reading goals for this year, like consuming bookish podcasts and blogs or participating in more author events. After answering these reflections, you get to create your own prompts or pick prompts from previous reading challenges.
My Modern Mrs Darcy Reading Challenge Prompts
- A book about books or reading
- A book nominated for an award this year
- A prize winning book
- A book by a local author
- A book of poetry
- A book with a book club
- A book you can finish in a day
- A book you’ve been meaning to read
- A memoir
- A cover buy
- A book you should have read in high school
- A debut novel
I don’t think these are particularly ground-breaking reading challenge prompts, but they will hopefully take me out of my comfort zone. If you want to follow along with my Modern Mrs Darcy Reading Challenge, I’m tracking it over on The StoryGraph here. I also will try to review as many of the books and do an update every quarter.
